Low-Emissions Solutions Conference

SDSN hosts an annual Low-Emissions Solutions Conference (LESC) alongside the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change’s (UNFCCC) annual Conference of Parties (COP) as a direct follow-up to key commitments in the Paris Agreement. This forum serves as an opportunity for SDSN members to influence critical national discussions on decarbonization and the future pathway to a net zero world. Following a successful execution of several LESC forums at COP22, COP23 and COP24, in 2020 the conference continued into its fourth year playing an active role in bringing together different sectors and stakeholders to make progress toward the Paris Agreement at COP25. LESC provides a platform of dialogue and a match-making function between countries, cities, companies, and sector experts on innovative technology and policy solutions to implement the Paris Agreement.

The COP25 was moved to Spain just weeks ahead of the event due to civil unrest in Chile. Thanks to the support of SDSN Spain, hosted by Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, the COP25 LESC was able to take place on their campus in Madrid. The theme of this year’s event was Systems Transformation for a 1.5 Degree World. Over the course of two days, urban, corporate and academic experts presented solutions on energy decarbonization, industrial policy, buildings retrofits, and transportation market transformations, among other solutions, to achieve net zero emissions by mid-century. The conference is organized jointly by Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI), the SDSN, and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).
